Northern Sector

08:00 Model commits the 101 tanks of the 4th Panzer Division in support of the 20th Panzer Division in the battle for Samodurovka. At the same time, 118 tanks from the 2d Panzer Division strike again at Soviet defences protecting Ol'khovatka. The 20th and 4th launch four attacks in the area of Samodurovka between the defences of the 70th and 13th Armies, with the 17th Guards Rifle Corps bearing the brunt of the attack. Groups of between 60 and 100 German tanks supported by infantry advanced repeatedly against Samodurovka, Hill 257 and the ridge north of Ol'khovatka. At 17:00 Hill 257 was successfully occupied by German forces but any further advance was stopped.

At dawn the Soviet 307th Rifle Division counterattacked at Ponyri station. After gaining a foothold in the town they faced renewed German attacks which left part of the town in German hands and the rest in Soviet.

In the evening of the 8th, Model decides to regroup before renewing his assault on Ol'khovatka in the morning of the 9th.

Southern Sector

09:20 Pz.SSDR/Pz.LSSAH run into more than 40 Russian tanks SE of Wesselyi; engagement lasts 70 minutes.

10:00 SSDR hit by tank attack (40) at Teterevino; repulsed.

10:00 SSDR hit by tank attack at Kalinin; some slip through.

10:30 Remaining tanks in contact with Pz.SSDR/Pz.LSSAH break off, turn south and attack I/2.LSSAH in Jablotschki.

11:00 Pz.LSSAH/Pz.SSDR regroup and attack west.

11:30 4 T-34s attack N Luchki from the E having slipped by SSDR; all destroyed.

11:30 4 T-34s attack NW of Pokrovka; repulsed; 2 destroyed.

11:45 2.LSSAH reinforced at N Luchki by Pi.LSSAH/StuG.LSSAH following sightings of major Russian tank force NE of Teterevino.

12:00 4 T-34s attack N of Bol Majatschki; all 4 destroyed by 1.LSSAH.

12:00 167ID hit by tank attack (60) at Ternovka; Bde of 2GT; repulsed.

12:05 Pz.LSSAH/Pz.SSDR attack Wesselyi and hills 239.6/227.4.

16:00 5GT Corps, with 100TB attached, attacks LSSAH

18:15 Pz.LSSAH attacked by more than 30 tanks/AGs from N and E; more than 20 destroyed.

Later in the day of the 8th, 7 counter-attacks are launched against GD; 35 AFVs destroyed by GD-s StuG Battalion.
